Welcome to Year 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)
In Key Stage 1 the curriculum remains focused on key learning skills and building upon their knowledge from their experiences in Foundation Stage. The balance of skills and knowledge shifts between Year 1 and Year 2 as children embed their skills and acquire aptitude in learning. As children develop fluency in maths, reading, writing their ability to absorb, so a more knowledge based curriculum increases. Topics and themes will broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of the world and more subject specific content will be delivered by teachers. In Year 2, children will continue to develop their phonics and reading skills through daily teaching sessions and ensuring that a rich and demanding vocabulary range is in all practitioners’ minds when delivering lessons.
