Caterpillar story stick

You will need a ruler or long piece of card to clip your circles onto, clothes pegs , scissors, glue and the printable sheet or pictures you have drawn of the leaf, fruits and foods from the story. Make the story clips by sticking a picture onto the bottom of each peg. If you have time you could make your long piece of card or ruler look like the hungry caterpillar.

First re read the story with your adult. Try to remember what the very hungry caterpillar ate on each different day. Now try to retell the story by clipping the story circles onto the caterpillar body. Alternatively you could clip on the circles as you read through the story.

Foods that the very hungry caterpillar ate.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is very full !

Can you remember the names of the foods and fruits that he ate. Talk to your grown up about your favourite fruits and vegetables.

Now write a shopping list of food by trying hard to hear the first sound in each word, draw a picture of them as you go along to help.

Can you think of any other fruits that The Very Hungry Caterpillar might have tried if he had the chance ?

Here are some words that might help you.

apple, pears, plums, oranges, strawberries

Story sequencing

On his journey to becoming a butterfly the caterpillar ate his way through a lot of food. Can you help to put the pictures from the story back into the correct order. Cut out the pictures then rearrange them with help from your grown up to retell the story with the events in the right place.
