Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1 the curriculum remains focused on key learning skills and building upon their knowledge from their experiences in Foundation Stage. The balance of skills and knowledge shifts between Year 1 and Year 2 as children embed their skills and acquire aptitude in learning. As children develop fluency in maths, reading, writing their ability to absorb, so a more knowledge based curriculum increases. Topics and themes will broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of the world and more subject specific content will be delivered by teachers. In Year 2 children will continue to develop their phonics and reading skills through daily teaching sessions and ensuring that a rich and demanding vocabulary range is in all practitioners’ minds when delivering lessons.
