Miss Sykes and Murphy here with another little maths problem for you!

Murphy’s Missing Toys

Murphy loves his toys but he can’t keep them in his toy box. He keeps losing them.

On Saturday, Murphy had 10 toys in his toy box.

He lost 2 toys in the garden.

He then lost 1 toy under the sofa and 1 under the bed.

How many toys were left in Murphy’s toy box?

Top Tip: You might want to use subtraction, or count down from 10 or even use a number line to help you solve this.

Extra Challenge! If Murphy had 20 toys in his toy basket and he lost 3 in the garden, 2 under the sofa and 1 in the park, how many toys would he have left?

How Many Treats Would Murphy Eat?

Murphy loves his treats and he gets one every time he’s followed instructions or been a good boy. His favourite treats are salmon strips and Miss Sykes breaks each one up into 4  even pieces  so Murphy can have more.

If Murphy had 4 whole salmon strips in one day, how many smaller treats would he have eaten?

Top Tip: You could use bar models or your own drawings to investigate this or you could use your multiplication/division knowledge!

Extra Challenge: If Miss Sykes broke each strip into 6 small pieces, how many little treats would Murphy eat?

Murphy's Minutes

In Challenge 1, you had to work out how many miles Murphy and I walked each week.

Now you  have to calculate how long it takes us to walk our miles each week!

It takes Murphy and I 93 minutes to walk 3.17 miles (every day except Sunday) and it takes us 124 minutes to walk 4.25 miles (on Sundays)

Can you work out the amount of time (in hours and minutes) we walk each week?

Extra Challenge: We’ve been in lockdown for 8 weeks now. How much time do you think we have spent walking in total?  Show your answer in hours and minutes.

Remember to save your calculations and answers. I will be posting the answers on the website very soon!
